Season Preview – The Saints bring a lot of firepower back from last year's squad, which scored 28 goals last second, second most in school history, led by GNAC scoring champion Brandon Madsen. Madsen wasted no time making his presence known in the GNAC as a transfer from Seattle University, scoring a conference leading 16 goals and 33 points. Madsen broke the school record in both categories for a single season. His offensive tools led to him being named the GNAC Newcomer of the Year, GNAC first team All-Conference, and a D2CCA second team All-Region player. Alongside Madsen will be another record breaker in Sebastian Navarro. Navarro set the single season assist record with 11 and looks to repeat as a GNAC All-Conference caliber player in his junior year. The Saints feature a senior at goalkeeper in Griffin Small, who recorded 84 saves in 17 matches last year. All-Conference selection Caymon John established himself as one of the best young players in the conference last year as only a freshman and is poised to build on that going into his second year. Other notable returners include Nick Phillips, Steven Chu, Steven Murray Todd JR, and Jose Marquez. The Saints open the season with two home exhibition matches on August 18 and 23 versus Tacoma CC and Pacific Lutheran. SMU begins the regular season with road matches in Idaho and California before playing at home against Hawaii Hilo on September 13.

Madsen Starts In Style - It didn't take the GNAC scoring leader, Brandon Madsen, long to find the back of the net in 2018, scoring three goals in the opening 35 minutes to power the Saints to a 3-1 exhibition win over Pacific Lutheran on Thursday. The Saints quickly jumped on the Lutes, after assists by Alexis Lopez and freshman Cole Mattson, found the open Madsen on the far side of the box. Madsen made quick work and found the seam on the near side of the goal for his first goal of the match. The combination of Sebastian Navarro and Madsen, which resulted in double-digits goals for the Saints last year, payed dividends in the 26th minute. Navarro led Madsen up the middle of the field, and Madsen converted the one-on-one chance with the goalie for the second goal of the match. The final strike for the true hat trick came in the 35th minute when Madsen worked past multiple defenders and connected from the middle of the box to put SMU up 3-0.

Saints' Offense Stays In the Flow - The Northwest defense had no answer for Jason Fairhurst, as he scored two goals in the second half, combined with goals from Caymon John and Oscar Aguilar, the Saints routed the Eagles 4-2 in an exhibition match on Saturday. John marked the only goal in the first half, scoring in the 15th minute, his first goal of the preseason. The Saints' defense managed to shut out the Eagles' offense in the first 45 minutes, stopping six shots with two saves. The Saints quickly widened the gap in the second half as Fairhurst connected in the 60th and 68th minute to put the Saints up 3-0. Aguilar provided the final blow in the 4-2 victory his first goal of the preseason in the 87th minute.

Rob Walker Enters His 12th Year At The Helm – Since the program was started in 2007, Rob Walker was been the head coach every step of the way. Walker has led the Saints to over 100 victories in his time at SMU including a GNAC Conference title in 2009.
