Season Preview – The Saints feature what is expected to be a strong back line, anchored by All-Conference selection
Rose Robbins and GNAC saves leader
Ali Koehler. Koehler's 95 saves last season were the fourth most in a single season in school history, along with playing in over 1,100 minutes in 13 matches. Along with Robbins (16 matches, 1,416 minutes) and Koehler, the Saints return
Kylee Sarchett, who missed part of last season with an injury, along with impact players,
Kiersten Madsen,
Jade Castaneda,
Gloria Petri,
Amber Burbridge, and
Shea McKnight. Madsen was second on the team last year in goals scored at two and McKnight added one goal and one assist in nine matches. Fans can also expect to see many new faces on the pitch for SMU, as head coach
Heather Cato brought in 11 new players, along with seven transfers. Coming from successful careers in the NWAC,
Morgan Lord,
LeAnn Phanakhone, and
Nicole Macaluso, all will provide SMU with experience and leadership. Freshman incomers include
Maia Larsen from Poulsbo, Wash.,
Taelor Belarmino-Bruce from Ewa Beach, Hawaii,
Melissa Alvarado from Walla Walla, Wash., and
Jenna Ramirez from Waipahu, Hawaii. The Saints open the season on the road with a match against Corban (an NAIA opponent) before playing Northwest Christian on 9/1 for their home opener. SMU faces a pair of California schools, Academy of Art and Holy Names, on 9/6 and 9/8 respectively before traveling to local rival The Evergreen State College on 9/11. The Saints begin conference on the road at Northwest Nazarene, before a four game home stand, featuring Seattle Pacific and Western Washington. Other notable home games for the Saints include Central Washington on 10/11 and Western Oregon for senior day on 10/27.
Preseason Review – The Saints launched a volley of attacks at the Warner Pacific, connecting on 38 shots, 20 landing on goal, and four reaching the back of the net, for a 4-1 exhibition victory.
Selesha Harrah got the Saints on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute. Warner Pacific scored an equalizer in the second half, before
Kiersten Madsen connected for a goal in the 61st minute and a PK in the 83rd minute. The final blow came in the 89th on a
Gloria Petri goal to secure the victory. If the match had counted for official stats, the school record for most shots in a single game was 24; however, the Saints would have blown that record out of water, hitting 17 shots in the first half and 21 in the second half for a total of 38. The Saints then faced and defeated Lewis & Clark College 1-0; however, stats were not recorded from the event.
Many New Faces – After graduating three seniors from last year, the Saints added a wave a new players. Eleven new players will dawn Saints' uniforms for the first time, featuring seven transfers and four freshman. Out of the 11, seven are homegrown from the state of Washington, with two from Hawaii, one from Oregon and one from Idaho.
Koehler Making History –
Ali Koehler enters the season at 156 saves in her career, which places her third in school history. Her 95 saves last year shot her up the leaderboard and tied her for fourth most saves in a single season with
