Saints Blank Toros For First Win Of The Season– Fueled by another goal from All-Region forward
Brandon Madsen, and a combined effort by the Saints' back line, Saint Martin's blanked Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0 to begin their California trip. The GNAC Defensive Player of the Week,
Griffin Small, put on quite an encore to last week's 14 save performance, recording his first clean sheet of the season. Madsen scored his second goal of the season and 18th of his career, putting him in a tie for fourth most in school history with Ruben Orozco.
Late Comeback Attempt Falls Short In Road Loss– Despite setting scoring records last season and being the primary target defenses are forced to shut down,
Brandon Madsen continues to score goals. However, his PK goal in the 76th was not enough in the 2-1 road loss to Cal State San Marcos on Saturday. The Cougars (4-0-0) continued their perfect run of the 2018 season by scoring in the 33rd and a critical goal in the 76th minute to hold off the Saints' (1-3-0) comeback efforts. Madsen has accounted for all three of the Saints' goals this season, and
Griffin Small finished with two saves.
Navarro Nets First Goal In 2-1 Loss To UC San Diego – Two first half goals by UC San Diego proved to be the difference maker in the Saints' 2-1 road loss as SMU wrapped up their week-long trip to California. The Tritons (4-0-0) struck early on the Saints (1-4-0), scoring in the 22nd minute and once again right before halftime in the 42nd minute. The second half, the Saints created many more offensive opportunities, including a goal from
Sebastian Navarro in the 55th minute to cut the score to one. The Tritons' defense managed to prevent the equalizer and survive the final 34 minutes.
Griffin Small Named GNAC Player of the Week – For the first week of the regular season, goalkeeper Small was named the GNAC Defensive Player of the Week. Small led the GNAC in the opening week of action with 14 saves, despite only playing in three of the four halves. Small faced 20 shots in the two matches, and recorded 11 saves in a row to open the year. Only allowing one goal, Small boasted an impressive .933 save percentage and 0.67 GAA.
Gauntlet Of The Non-Conference Season – Entering their final non-conference match, the Saints' non-conference opponents held a combined record of 15-5-0. Out of the five opponents, three were ranked in the top four of the United Soccer Coaches' West Region poll.
Rob Walker Enters His 12th Year At The Helm – Since the program was started in 2007,
Rob Walker was been the head coach every step of the way. Walker has led the Saints to over 100 victories in his time at SMU including a GNAC Conference title in 2009.
Records To Watch For – After the historic season last year for
Brandon Madsen, where he broke the school record for most goals (16) and points (33) in a single season, Madsen looks to climb on the Saints' All-Time leaderboard. With three goals in 2018, Madsen currently sits at 19 career goals, ranking tied for third in school history. His seven points in 2018 brings him to 40 career points, placing him fifth all-time.
Griffin Small entered the 2018 third all-time on saves leaderboard with 155. Currently, Small sits with 26 saves in 2018 and is now at 181, only 16 saves away from second in program history.
Sebastian Navarro needs only two assists to tie for second in school history, after entering this season at 12 assists.
