LACEY, Wash. – Despite playing the third ranked team in the nation, the Saints had to fight through being a man down for a majority of the match, as SMU fell to Simon Fraser 6-1 at home.
After falling behind early 2-1, the Saints were dealt another blow when All-Conference player
Cayman John was issued a red card in the 33rd minute. The Saints managed to punch in a score in the 37minute to draw the score within one before Simon Fraser pull away in the second half.
The Saints allowed two quick goals to Simon Fraser, in the 7th and 12th minute before a major card was dealt to the Saints in the 33rd. John was sent off the field, but the Saints did not quit. SMU managed to score in the 37
th minute, when
Brandon Madsen scored his sixth goal of the year off assists from
Sebastian Navarro and
Stephen Todd Murray JR.
The Clan pulled away quickly in the second half, scoring three goals in the matter of seven minutes and ended up with a 6-1 victory over the Saints.
"If you take the score line away from the game, there are some important points to drawn in terms of our grit and willingness to play under tough circumstances," said head coach
Rob Walker. "We felt the first two goals we should've done much better with. Simon Fraser is a top class team. We've now played many of the best teams in our region and they are definitely a Cadillac in the region. We will look to rebound and get ready to play a very tough Northwest Nazarene team on Thursday."
