Kam's Golden Goal Lifts Saints To 3-2 Victory Over Nighthawks

LACEY, Wash. – With the match tied at 2-2, and time running out on the first overtime period, Sebastian Navarro played a ball back to Brandon Kam, who in turn was able to create an angle in the corner. Kam's cross managed to deflect off the hands of Northwest Nazarene's keeper, and find its' way into the net for a golden goal victory.

Kam picked the perfect time to score his first career goal, knotting a critical 3-2 victory over Northwest Nazarene. The Saints had an uphill battle in the match, playing without multiple key players, but it was efforts from Oscar Aguilar, Brandon Madsen, and Kam who helped secure the victory.

The Nighthawks got on the board first with a goal off a deflection in the 27th minute. The Saints had opportunities in the first half to tie, but the Nighthawks were able to hold them off the scoreboard.

In the second half, the Saints' offense came alive in the 63rd minute when Aguilar scored off of a deflection from eight yards out to tie the match. Just 1 minute and 22 seconds later, the leading goal scorer in the GNAC, Madsen punched home his 11th of the year. Off a ball from Jason Fairhurst, Madsen's header found the back of the net from 10 yards out.

However, Northwest Nazarene refused to go quietly, as NNU struck right back and equalized the match in the 69th minute. Both sides fought to the end of regular time and forced overtime.

It was in the 99th minute that Kam's cross sealed the victory for the Saints and provided the first GNAC win of the year for Saint Martin's.

"We had to change our team quite a bit today and it took us a while to get clicking," said head coach Rob Walker. "We had several players (Fabian Kirby, Austin Platt and Treyson Ramos) make their first starts and we thought they all played really well. Northwest Nazarene always comes to Lacey and plays well and the winning goal was one of those hard challenges that could have gone either way. I thought the start of our second half was the brightest part of the whole game and we need to "bottle" the flow we created and carry it forward. The other piece today came from our veteran players on the field and on the bench. Their attitude was spot on and really made this "bounce back" possible."

The Saints continue their homestand with a match against Western Washington on Thursday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
