SEATTLE – Saint Martin's was able to keep the Falcons' offense in check for the opening 50 minutes; however, three second half goals proved to be deciding factor in the Saints' 3-1 loss on Thursday night.
Defense was the tune of the match in the opening half, with Saint Martin's limiting Seattle Pacific to only four shots. Goalie
Sophie Mendoza made one save in the half, while the other three shots were unable to find their target.
In the second half, it was the Falcons who were able to put the first goal of the match up, with a 22 yard shot to the middle of the net in the 52nd minute. SPU struck again in the 60th minute with a shot to the lower left post from 20 yards out.
Saint Martin's did not waste any time after the second goal, and just 78 seconds later, had cut the lead in half. Off of a free kick from 40 yards out, senior
Maddison Maffeo connected on a bouncer through the box that found its way to the far post. The goal marked the first of Maffeo's SMU career, the Saints first goal in GNAC action.
However, Seattle Pacific sealed the match with a goal in the 70th minute to clinch the 3-1 result.
Mendoza followed up her performance in the first half with six more saves in the second half. Saint Martin's recorded three shots on the night, with Maffeo counting for two, both on net, and
Maia Larsen adding one.
The Saints continue their road trip with a flight to Montana State Billings on Thursday, October 24th. The match is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. PST with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
