LACEY, Wash. – Saint Martin's went to halftime trailing by two goals to GNAC foe Concordia, despite leading in all offensive categories. The narrative quickly flipped in the Saints' comeback over the Cavaliers in the second half.
Oscar Aguilar led the charge with two goals on free kicks within the first four minutes to equalize. The final blow came from the GNAC's leading scorer,
Brandon Madsen, who's header in the 65th minute completed the epic comeback for a critical GNAC victory for Saint Martin's.
Concordia jumped out to the early lead in the 14th minute, scoring on a ball that deflected off Saints' goalie
Dylan Shaw, right to the Cavaliers leading scorer. Right before half, Concordia punched home another goal in the 43rd minute, on a cross to the middle of the box from 10 yards out.
After being shutout for the first time all season on Thursday, the Saints needed a spark to re-energize their conference best offense. That spark came from Aguilar.
Just 70 seconds into the second half, Aguilar perfectly lined up a free kick from 25 yards out, burying the ball into the top left corner of the net. Lighting struck twice for Aguilar just two minutes later. On a free ball from 20 yards out, Aguilar proceeded to blast a ball to bottom right post to equalize the match.
However, the Saints weren't satisfied with tying the match, and in the 65th minute, off a ball from
Jason Fairhurst, the final goal came. Fairhust found Madsen in the middle of the box, who headed the ball from 5 yards out to put SMU on top 3-2.
The Saints defense held for the final 25 minutes of the match, with Shaw leading the way with six saves on 16 shots.
"We felt like our back four had played well against a good Western Washington team on Thursday and the six guys that jumped in to play in that group today did really well," said head coach
Rob Walker. "There were some great moments of ball winning and possession that we need to extend forward. Up front, we had solid production from
Oscar Aguilar, who may have played his best game as a Saint and we had the usual strong performances from
Brandon Madsen and
Jason Fairhurst as they linked up for the final goal. There's a lot of pride and love for each other in this team and as coaches, we have a ton of respect for what they have worked for and accomplished today."
Saint Martin's concludes their homestand with a match on Thursday, October 24 against Seattle Pacific. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
