BILLINGS, Mont. – In the frigid temperatures of Montana, the Saints' offense caught on fire. With the match tied 1-1, and the clock winding down, freshman
Maddie Wolff rifled a ball to the back of the net for a golden goal game winner.
It was a quiet first half for the Saints' offense, while the defense came up with three saves on seven shots to keep the score tied at 0-0 at halftime.
The Yellowjackets struck first in the second half, scoring a goal just three minutes in. However, the lead did not hold for long. Brown connected on a ball from
Shea McKnight, and
LeAnn Phanakhone, at the top of the box for her first goal of the year to equalize at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.
Both sides battled back and forth for the remainder of the second half; however, neither were able to find the finishing touch, and the match went to overtime.
The first ten minutes of overtime went by with no change in score, and forced a second overtime. In the final ten minutes of action, Phanakhone connected on two shots, one of which landed on target. However, it was the final push by the Saints that was the difference maker.
Rose Robbins played a ball up the field to McKnight, and in turn played forward to Wolff with just seconds left on the clock. Wolff lined up the shot from 35 yards out and blasted a ball to the left post, squeezing past the goalie, and wining the match for Saint Martin's.
"I'm so proud of the resiliency the team showed today," said head coach
Heather Cato. We flew in late, woke up early, dealt with the elements, went down a goal, and answered with two great goals. This team has had a tough schedule to start the GNAC season. It was great to see them continue to have pride in themselves, fight hard, and walk away with a W."
Freshman goalie
Ali Campigotto, and the Saints' backline rose to the challenge, facing 24 shots on the day. Campigotto made 13 saves, setting a new career high, and was her third match of the year with 10 or more saves.
The Saints capped off their road trip and trip home to host Western Oregon on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
