LACEY, Wash. - Logging their first career double-doubles,
Alex Schumacher and
Logan Rooney combined for 51 points as Saint Martin's notched their first victory of the season in style with a 99-76 victory over Capilano.
The Saints came out with a slow start, tying with the Blues at 7-7, then trailing 15-9 minutes later. This ended quickly when Saint Martin's responded by going on a 16-0 run. Six different players contributed in the run, bringing the score to 25-15 with 10 minutes left in the first half.
The momentum continued to swing towards the Saints' way for the rest of the first half. Coming off the bench, Rooney and
Caden Smith combined for 17 points, 15 of which from beyond the arc. Behind the efforts of Rooney and Smith, the Saints' lead extended to 55-35 entering the break.
Both teams traded baskets in the beginning of the second half, with the Saints holding their lead, and continuing to apply pressure on Capilano's defense. Of the Saints 44 second half points, 42 came from only four players. Schumacher added 12 second half points to finish with 22 on the night, while fellow guards
CJ Jennings and
Demonte Malloy combined for 20. Off of a strong first half, Rooney capped off his signature night with another 12 points, ending with a career high 27 points.
The Saints' lead swelled to as many as 26 in the second half, and coasted down the stretch to a victory of 99-76.
The Saints as team shot 38 for-79 (36.1 percent) from the field, 17-for-37 (45.9 percent) beyond the arc, and 6-for-10 at the line. SMU grabbed 46 rebounds, collected 24 assists on 15 turnovers, along with three blocks and 15 steals.
