FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Saint Martin's saw their 2019 season come to a close in Alaska, with the Nanooks taking the match in four sets.
The Saints began the day on fire, led by
Mackenzie Carter's 10 kills in the opening set alone. Neither side was able to find an edge throughout a majority of the set, with the score being tied 11 different times. Down the stretch, the Saints found their footing, with kills coming from three different players. Carter led the charge with three kills in the final five SMU points to secure the 25-22 victory.
However, the momentum came to halt in the second quarter, as Alaska went on an 8-0 run in the early parts of the set to take a lead. Saint Martin's offense struggled to regroup, and the Nanooks rolled to a 25-10 second set.
The third set continued to be in favor of the Nanooks as Alaska scored 11 of the opening 12 points in the frame. Saint Martin's offensively struggles continued in the third set, as the set came to a close in favor of Alaska.
Alaska once again used an early run, this time 8-1, to set the tone in the fourth set. Saint Martin's began to find some momentum at the end of the fourth set, rattling off five points in a row. However, the run came too late, and Alaska secured the match victory.
Kylie Alos officially set a school record in digs per set in a single season. The sophomore broke the record with a 4.92 mark, set last season by
Courtney Misner. Alos ended the year with 14 digs, while Carter added 15 kills and eight digs.
Alyssa Bartlett recorded 32 assists and six digs, and
Emily Gooding and
Ililani Kamaka each tallied seven kills.
