LACEY, Wash. – Tierney DeDonatis scored a season-high 26 to lead Saint Martin's in a blowout win against Northwest Christian on Saturday night with lights-out shooting and defense to blow past the Beacons 83-50.
The Saints came out strong defensively from the opening tip, recording nine steals and four blocked shots while forcing the Beacons into 19 total turnovers, 10 of which being in the first half. SMU shot 52.2 percent from beyond the arc, while holding Northwest Christian to just 28.1. Four players finished with double-digit points, including a season-high from DeDonatis and another double-double from
Bria Thames.
The Saints' offense fired up early in the first quarter, taking a 13-4 lead minutes in. Northwest Christian scored their first 3-pointer seconds later, but DeDonatis responded with a three to spark a seven point run, and kickstart her career night. DeDonatis finished out the quarter with back-to-back threes to take a 28-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
DeDonatis continued her hot streak, scoring 10 of the Saints' 15 points in the second quarter, two of which were beyond the arc to push SMU's lead to 43-23 by half. Saint Martin's defense forced ten turnovers with three steals by halftime, holding the Beacons 9-28 shooting from the floor.
In the third quarter, the Saints led 58-30 after scoring 11 straight points over NCU with baskets from three different Saints. Back-to-back baskets from
Mallory Vivola and a free throw shot from Thames gave Saint Martin's its biggest lead up to that point of 29 with 2:37 left in the third quarter. DeDonatis drilled another three, and
Emily Nelson came off the bench to score one for the Saints to end the period 68-41.
Seven different Saints scored in the final quarter to widen SMU's lead.
Makenzy Porter scored her first career basket to finish out the game, and give the Saints their biggest lead of the day at the final margin of 83-50.
DeDonatis led the Saints in scoring, and marked her career high in points and assists with five. Thames recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and a season-high of 16 rebounds.
Janealle Sutterlict added 10 points and six assists while Vivola finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
Saint Martin's shot 33-for-67 (49.3 percent) from the floor, 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) beyond the arc, and 5-for-9 (55.6 percent) at the line. On the night, the Saints collected 39 rebounds, with nine assists on 13 turnovers, along with nine steals and one block.
