Weevils Hand Saints Road Loss in Final Game Of DII Power Invitational

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Saint Martin's lost to University of Arkansas at Monticello, 93-68, on Saturday night in their last game of the Division II Power Invitational hosted by Hawaii Hilo. Despite the best efforts of three Saints combining for 48 points, the Saints struggled to find an offensive rhythm and showcase a comeback.

Freshman Alex Schumacher led all Saints in points with 18 for the third time this season, while adding six rebounds and two steals. Demonte Malloy followed with 16 points then Logan Rooney who came off the bench with 14. The Saints tallied a solid 40.6 shooting percentage from the field goal range; however, it was no match against UAM's 50.8 percent from the floor.

The Saints and Weevils went neck and neck in the opening minutes with ties at 5-5 then at 11-11 at 14:49 off a three from Malloy. University of Arkansas at Monticello proceeded to go on an 8-2 run, six of which points were from free throw shots. Baskets from Rooney and CJ Jennings brought the score back within three at 19-16. The Saints traded baskets with the Weevils until they took off running and widened their lead to 14, making the score 45-31 at halftime.

Saint Martin's came out of the second half looking to chip away at the lead and scored early baskets to cut the lead to. However, the baskets continued to fall for UAM, which in turn, widened the lead to as many as 29 in the second half. Although SMU's best attempts, they ultimately fell 93-68 to the Weevils.

Malloy acquired 6 rebounds along with his 16 points, and Rooney recorded 5 rebounds along with his 14 points. John Moore ended the game with seven points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The Saints as team shot 26-for-64 (40.6 percent) from the field, 8-for-29 (27.6 percent) beyond the arc, and 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) at the line. SMU grabbed 36 rebounds, collected 11 assists on 16 turnovers, along with one block and four steals.

Saint Martin's returns home to open up the New Year on Thursday, January 2 at 7:30 p.m. against Alaska with live stats and video at smusaints.com.
