TUCSON, Ariz – Trailing by three runs,
Brandi Schoessler came in and quieted Fort Lewis College's bats to give the Saints an opportunity for a comeback. They did just that, scoring four runs to come back and win 4-3 to kick-off the D2 Cactus Classic. Saint Martin's then fell in five innings to No. 21 Colorado Mesa in an 11-0 game.
Fort Lewis jumped on the Saints in the early innings of the first game, scoring a run in the second on a single. Then a solo blast in the third, followed by an RBI single gave FLC a 3-0 after three innings.
Kylee Vanderbout got SMU on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single, plating
Kylie Lopez. However, the bulk of the Saints' damage came in the fifth inning, starting with an RBI double by
Sabrina Hicks. Lopez delivered the crushing blow, doubling, and scoring both Hicks and
Trinity Favela, which proved the be eventual game-winning hit.
