TUCSON, Ariz. – The Saints went from only collected two hits in the first game against Biola, to slugging 12 runs and ending the game in five innings with their win over Black Hills State at the second day of action of the D2 Cactus Classic.
Saint Martin's split the pair on the day and did so in opposite fashion. In the first game, the team went a combined 2-for-23 at the plate, including only one walk; however, they only struck out once. 14 ground outs, and five fly outs later, the Saints fell 4-0 to start the day. In the second game, SMU went 14-for-32, with five runs in the first, four in the second, and then a run in the third, fourth, and fifth, before closing the door in the fifth on the 12-1 victory.
Lauren Maley (0-2) and
Brandi Schoessler combined to toss seven innings, only allowing one earned run. However, three runs, all coming in the sixth, were unearned against Schoessler and Biola pulled away for the victory.
The last 10 batters for the Saints were sat down in order, and the only time SMU had a runner in scoring position was the second inning. A two out walk from Kylie Vanderbout, followed by an error on
Regan Byrd's ball to left put a runner in scoring position. However, Biola worked out of the jam with a ground out back to the pitcher.
Saint Martin's did not wait long to reverse the script in the second game, scoring five runs in the opening frame.
Trinity Favela's double scored the first two runs of the game, before
Devyn Connolly added two more on her double.
Trinity Loeb capped off the inning with another double, the third double of the inning to left field, scoring Connolly.
In the second inning,
Sabrina Hicks started the scoring with an RBI single to center, plating
Lauren Diuco. Connolly followed suit with an RBI single, then Loeb once again wrapped it up, this time a two RBI single to center. The Saints exploded for nine runs in the opening two innings.
A fielder's choice and error in the third inning brought home the tenth run of the game before Black Hills State got their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third. The final two runs came over the next two innings, starting with
Nicki DeHan reaching on an error, scoring Diuco. The 12th run was scored on a RBI single to left from Diuco, bringing home
Julia Lucas.
Jessica O'Toole (1-1) picked up her first victory of the season, starting the first three innings of the game, allowing the one run on four hits, while striking out one.
Kimberlyn Tutt came in relief in the fourth and fifth, throwing shutout work and striking one out.
The Saints' final game of the D2 Cactus Classic is tomorrow against St. Mary's (TX). First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
