LACEY, Wash. – The combination of
Aaron Shoup and
Mickey Walker continued to prove to be fatal for batters, as the two combined for a 10-strikeout, one run gem.
Austin Feist delivered with a home run and RBI single to power the Saints' bats in the 3-1 victory before Northwest Nazarene responded with an 8-0 win in game two.
Shoup defended his home mound once again, this time going eight strong innings, allowing only one run on three hits. The senior punched out seven Nighthawks and improved to 2-2 on the season. Walker was called in to face the ninth inning, and the Nighthawks were unable to even put a barrel to the ball. Walker struck out all three batters for his third save of the season. Feist collected two hits, including a home run in the second and the insurance RBI in the seventh to lift SMU to a 3-1 win. The Nighthawks managed to salvage a split with an 8-0 win in game two, with five runs coming in the final inning.
Aaron Renaud got the Saints on the board first with an RBI double to right center on an 0-2 count. Renaud drove in
Colton Peha, who reached earlier in the inning on a single down the left field line.
Feist proceeded to add to the Saints' lead in the second inning with his first home run of the season, coming to left field on a 1-0 count. Northwest Nazarene's first and only run of the game came in the fourth inning on a sac fly to right field. Feist added an insurance run in the seventh on a RBI single, but it was not needed as Shoup and Walker closed down the eighth and ninth for the win.
In the second game, pitching continued to be the theme of the day, as neither side scored until the fifth inning. Northwest Nazarene scored two in the fifth and a home run in the sixth made it a 3-0 game. NNU iced the game in the seventh inning by adding five more runs and was able to walk away with a split on day one.
Tanner Inouye (1-4) got the start in game two, going 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, with eight strikeouts.
Luke Hare pitched one inning, giving up five runs and
Robbie Shineman recorded the final out in the seventh.
The Saints and the Nighthawks wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon. Live stats will be available on smusaints.com.
