French Crushes Two Home Runs In Saints' Sweep Of SFU

BURNABY, BC – The senior Alyssa French delivered home runs in both ends of the doubleheader against Simon Fraser, while freshman Trinity Favela delivered the game-winning RBI single in extras as Saint Martin's swept 10-1 and 7-6.

The offense came alive for the Saints as they crossed the northern border, scoring 17 runs on 19 hits. French hit a three run home run in game one, followed by a solo blast in game two to provide the power for SMU. In the circle, Brandi Schoessler did it all for the Saints, as she closed out game one for the save, before going 7.1 innings in game two for her ninth win of the season.

In the opening game, the Saints quickly jumped on Simon Fraser, scoring two runs in the first inning. Simon Fraser's lone run came in the third inning on a RBI single to left field, cutting the score to 2-1.

The Saints added one in the fourth on a Nicki DeHan fly ball, driving in French, and one in the fifth on a RBI groundout by Favela. The floodgates opened in the sixth, as Saint Martin's scored six more runs. French accounted for half, while Favela drove in one on a sac fly and Emery Norwood stole home. The Saints ended the game in the bottom of the sixth on the run rule.

Lauren Maley (2-6) got the win after going three innings to start, allowing one run on six hits with three strike outs. Schoessler picked up her first save of the season with a three inning relief performance with three strikeouts.

In the second billing, French got the Saints on the board first, hitting her third home run of the season in the second. Devyn Connolly later tripled in the inning and scored on an error, but scored Kylie Vanderbout on the hit. Lauren Diuco wrapped up the four run inning with a RBI single scoring Emily Thornton.

Simon Fraser added back three runs in the bottom of the third, but Sabrina Hicks quickly responded. The senior tripled in the fourth, scoring both Norwood and Thornton to give SMU a 6-3 lead.

The Clan plated one run in the fifth before managing to tie the game in the seventh inning. A RBI double and sac fly scored the fifth and sixth runs to send the game into extra innings. It would be in the ninth inning, when Favela singled to left field, bringing in Hicks that the Saints were able to close out the 7-6 victory.

Saint Martin's travels to Western Washington on Sunday for another GNAC doubleheader action. Live stats and video of the games will be available on smusaints.com.
