Saints' Historic Season Comes To A Close In Sweet 16

SAN DIEGO – The two teams that had battled all season long for the top spot in the West, and it was only fate these two met in the Regional final. In front of a sold out electric crowd, Point Loma was led by the Regional Player of the Year Daulton Hommes' 25-point performance to end the historic season for the Saints, 60-54

Reaching their first ever Sweet 16, Saint Martin's was unable to find their 3-point all night long. The Saints found open looks but connected on only six out of 29 attempts. Three different Saints reached the double-digit mark, but the Saints were unable to find their flow on the offensive end all night. Point Loma held Saint Martin's to only 35 percent from the floor and 20 percent beyond the arc.

The Saints needed to come out early and hit some shots to quiet the crowd, and they did just that. Rhett Baerlocher scored the first basket, and Jordan Kitchen followed it up with a 3-pointer for a quick 5-0 lead.

Following the quick start, Point Loma responded with a 11-2 run that was snapped by a Boyce 3-pointer. Despite having two of the best offenses in the country facing off, defense was the theme of the first half. At the under eight timeout, Point Loma held a 15-14 lead.

After the Saints tied the game at 17-17 on a Chandler Redix 3-pointer, Point Loma ended the half on a tear. The Sea Lions outscored SMU by six and carried that advantage into half with a 30-24 edge.

Kitchen opened the second half with five straight points but the Saints' offense continued to struggled to find their shot from beyond the arc. It wasn't until six minutes in that Chavez connected on the first 3-pointer to cut the score to 38-35 in favor of Point Loma.

A layup by Tavian Henderson trimmed the game to a one possession game; however, the West Region Player of the Year Daulton Hommes responded with back-to-back 3-pointers. Point Loma's lead touched as many as 10 in the second half.

The Saints made a late run, getting the score down to 51-48 with only four minutes left to go. Point Loma answered right back with a Hommes' 3-pointer. Over the final four minutes, Saint Martin's had an opportunity to get within one point, but Chavez's attempt fell short. The Sea Lions stepped up at the line and iced their trip to the Elite 8.

Chavez was named to his second straight NCAA All-Region team for his efforts over the three games.

The season marks the most successful season in Saint Martin's history. On the year, the Saints reached their highest ranking ever, peaking at eighth overall in the country and winning 26 games, also an NCAA era school record. The Saints forged on to a 17-3 record in GNAC play and clinched their first ever GNAC regular season championship.
