LACEY, Wash. – Over the course of the four games against Montana State Billings, the Saints' offense never could provide the run support to back up the strong pitching efforts by their starters. In the finale doubleheader, the Saints were outscored 6-0 and 6-1, and did not score their first run until the sixth inning of the second game.
Clark Streby threw five strong innings to start game one, allowing only one run; however, in the sixth, the Yellowjackets finally got to the senior with a bases clearing double. The Yellowjackets tacked on runs in the late innings to win 6-0. Over in the second game, a quick run in the first continued the stretch of unanswered runs for MSUB. Until the Saints' run in the sixth, Montana State Billings had outscored SMU 12-0.
Saint Martin's first base runner in the opening game did not come until the fifth inning, when.
Colton Peha singled through the right side. Aaron Renuad followed suit with a walk, and
Austin Feist loaded the bases with a sharp single to left. Despite having the bases loaded with one out, the Yellowjackets worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and finally a ground ball to third.
In the second game, the Saints failed to capitalize on errors by Montana State Billings. In the second inning, a throwing error put
Dakota Hill aboard. Hill reached second but did not cross further than that.
In the third, a lead-off error, followed by a sac bunt from
Ty Matsunami gave SMU a runner in scoring position with less than two outs. Once again, SMU was unable to find the clutch hit, as two fly outs stranded the runner.
After leaving another two runners on the bath path in the fifth, the offensive drought came to end in the sixth. Feist connected on a one out double down the left field line, and later scored on a RBI single by Hill.
Over the course of the two games, Streby went six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Garrison Ritter pitched the next 2.2 innings before
Zach Alcos was called one to get the final out in the ninth.
Benjamin Wadowski got the start in the second game, going three plus innings, allowing three runs, one earned on four hits.
Mickey Walker pitched the fourth and
Robbie Shineman closed out the final three innings.
