MONMOUTH, Ore. – Clark Streby put together one of the best performances in his one and half seasons at Saint Martin's on Sunday afternoon. The senior righty went eight innings, allowing only four hits, no runs and struck out three as the Saints split the series with Western Oregon.
Streby was provided with 10 runs of support, the second most on the year by the Saints in a single game.
Austin Feist supplied a two run home run in the fourth as the Saints routed the Wolves in a 10-0 opener to manage a split in the series. With a chance to win the series, Western Oregon bounced back with 10 runs in the opening frames to secure the split with an 11-5 decision.
"Today was another highly competitive day across the board," said head coach
Kelly Gau. "We got great offensive production in the first game to support Clark. Each guy had a chance to contribute to the success in that game and it was fun to see them come through in clutch situations. Game two started the same for us with some gritty at bats to scratch runs in with a two out rally in the first inning. The challenge for us is to keep competing at a high level to give us a chance at making a run in the second half of conference play."
In the opening tilt, the Saints scored their first runs in the third on a sac bunt from
Elijiah Santiago, scoring
Micah McNicoll. Feist then lifted his second home run of the season, a two run shot in the kick off the fourth. The Saints later added one in the fourth on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.
RBI hits by
Ryan Colvin and
Aaron Renaud, along with an error by Western Oregon accounted for three more runs in the fifth inning. The final stamp came in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Renaud, setting up McNicoll who scored two more runs on another Wolves' error.
Streby (2-4) picked up the win with eight strong innings, before
Garrison Ritter completed the shutout with a scoreless ninth.
Feist added to his five hit day with an RBI single to start the second game, scoring Colvin. Renaud, who also had four hits on the afternoon, drove in Peha in the same inning on a single to left field.
Western Oregon scored their first runs of the day in the bottom of the first, driving in four runs in the frame. Saint Martin's managed to tie the game in the top of the second on a two RBI to left center by
Isaac Hegamin.
However, the game slipped away in the bottom of the second as Western Oregon threw up a six spot on the board. Peha connected on his second home run of the season in the fifth, a solo shot to right field to wrap up the 11-5 loss.
Benjamin Wadowski (1-4) tossed one inning and earned the loss before
Ryan Dorney could only get one out in the second.
Luke Hare and
Robbie Shineman combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, and were followed by
Zach Alcos who pitched the final inning.
The Saints travel to Montana to face the Yellowjackets of Montana State Billings next weekend. Action is set to begin Saturday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m. with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
