LACEY, Wash. – Battling through a nearly two hour rain delay, the Saints pulled off the 9-7 victory over Central Washington to pull into a tie for the final spot in the GNAC Championships.
Following the rain delay, the Saints scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to retake the lead.
Ryan Dorney and
Mickey Walker combined to the throw five innings of work, punching out eight and only allowing two runs.
Austin Feist delivered a game-tying home run in the first to erase a three run deficit and give the Saints life. SMU enters the three weeks of the regular season with a chance of qualifying for the GNAC Championships.
After Central Washington opened the game with three runs in the first,
Colton Peha drove in the first run in the bottom of the first. Feist then connected on a home run to deep left field to tie the game at 3-3.
CWU scored two more in the fourth before the rain began to fall. For nearly two hours, the game was delayed with the Saints having runners on second and third and no outs. After the rain had lifted, the Wildcats' pitching struggled to find their control.
Three straight walks tied the game and a double gave SMU a 6-5 lead.
Aaron Renaud added to the lead with a RBI single in the inning.
After a Central run in the fifth,
Cody Chavis and Renaud combined to add three more runs on RBI hits to provide the final run support for Dorney and Walker. Dorney went four innings, before Walker closed out the game for his fifth save of the year.
The Saints and the Wildcats' second game of the day was cancelled due to lack of light.
Saint Martin's hits the road for a four game series with Concordia next weekend.
