PORTLAND, Ore. – Needing two wins on the road to regain possession of the fourth and final GNAC Championship, the Saints pulled off an extra innings win, and lights out pitching performance in game two to secure the two must have victories.
A day after Concordia stole an 11-inning victory over the Saints, Saint Martin's returned the favor by scoring three runs in the 10th of game one. Three RBI singles in extra innings fueled the victory and gave the Saints momentum in game two.
Ryan Dorney pitched two shutout innings to start game two, followed
Benjamin Wadowski's 3.2 innings of relief work.
Mickey Walker collected his sixth save of the season, closing out the final 1.1 innings, while striking out two.
"We're really proud of the way everyone bounced back after a couple tough losses yesterday," said head coach
Kelly Gau. "The difference in today's games was being able to execute when we needed to and getting clutch hits was great to see. Offensively, we were able to get a great collective effort throughout the lineup during the day. Guys when up sticking to a plan and approach and came away with a lot of success. We're excited about the opportunity to continue to compete with one another and finish the season strong."
Saint Martin's started the scoring in the opener in an unusual way, reaching on a dropped third strike, and scoring a run in the third. Then in sixth inning,
Austin Feist continued his hot streak at the plate, belting a two run home run to right field.
Ryne Oshiro added to the lead with a sac fly in the seventh, and was followed by
Isaac Hegamin's RBI sac bunt to open the lead to 5-0.
However, Concordia was able to erase the five run lead over the course of two innings and force the game into extras. But the Saints quickly responded.
Micah McNicoll drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single through the right side.
Bryant Nakagawa and
Cody Chavis added to the inning with a pair of RBI singles of their own.
Clark Streby went 7.1 innings to start the game, allowing three runs on six hits.
Robbie Shineman followed with two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs.
Ryan Dorney (3-1) finished the game with two no-hit innings.
Concordia scored their lone run of the game in the third, and were able to hold the Saints' offense to nothing over the first four innings.
Aaron Renaud changed that in the fifth with his RBI single to right center to tie the game.
In the sixth, McNicoll drove in another eventual game-winning run, singling to center to score Feist. In the seventh, the Saints added three more insurance runs on RBI singles from both Hegamin and
Hunter Holmason.
The Saints return to action on the road next weekend, traveling to Northwest Nazarene for a four game series.
