Saints Remain in Playoff Hunt with Saturday Split

Nampa, Idaho – Following a Friday split, Saint Martin's and Northwest Nazarene ended their regular-season series Saturday night. Strong pitching and defense made up the difference as the Saints grabbed the game three victory, 5-1. Game four however, the Nighthawks jumped ahead and the late game heroics fell just short for SMU as Northwest Nazarene snuck out with the 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Behind 13 hits and a dominant 6.1 innings pitched by Clark Streby in game one, the Saints grabbed the lead early in the second inning and never looked back. Cody Chavis broke the early tie with a single to left-field and on the error by the left-fielder, Austin Feist was able to coast home from second making it 1-0. After moving around to third, Chavis was brought in on a fielder's choice by Micah McNicoll to extend the Saint's lead.

In the third inning the Saints would add another as Colton Peha brought home Isaac Hegamin on a fielding error by the Nighthawks. A sacrifice fly to left-field by Feist brought home Aaron Renaud to end the Saints' scoring for nearly the whole game.

Streby commanded the zone well through his first six innings; however, in the seventh, the Nighthawks finally claimed the elusive first run off of him with a solo home run to left making it a 4-1 game. While that home run ended Streby's day, it would remain the only offense found in game three by NNU.

The Saints answered back the next half inning to grab the final run of the game off another Nighthawks' error making it 5-1, the eventual final score of game three.

Power may not be Saint Martin's forte but this weekend they have shown their potential with five home runs on Friday and one more coming in the final game of the series. Isaac Hegamin jumped on one of the first pitches he saw in the first to give the Saints an immediate 1-0 lead.

That lead was short-lived unfortunately as the Nighthawks answered with five unanswered runs throughout the game. NNU answered for two in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead and then topped it all off with three in the fourth to go up 5-1.

The Saints did not go away easy. In the sixth McNicoll started the comeback with a liner back up the middle to bring in Renaud and advance Feist to third. Feist later scored on a 2-out single by Chavis.

Ryan Colvin added the final Saints run to the scoreboard with a single to right, bringing in McNicoll.

SMU had an opportunity in the seventh inning, getting the potential-tying run to second base, but a lineout and pop up ended their late-game opportunity, closing the door on a game four comeback.

Saint Martin's returns home on Friday, May 3 to celebrate senior weekend and end the regular season against Western Oregon. Game one will begin at 1 p.m., with live stats and video available at smusaints.com.
