BILLINGS, Mont. – Montana State Billings continued to get the better of the Saints in the 2019 campaign, as MSUB put up 19 runs in the opening game, before walking off the second tilt with a two run home run.
Ryne Oshiro played the hero in the second game, driving in the game-tying run in the seventh inning. Oshiro led off the day with three hits in the opening game, and drove in three runs on the afternoon. After an uncharacteristic pitching performance by the Saints,
Tanner Inouye came back with a 5.2 inning three run performance.
Mickey Walker threw the final innings, but was on the hook for the loss after giving up the walk-off home run.
The Yellowjackets scored four runs in the third inning but most of the damage in the 19-run outing was done in the fifth. Montana State Billings proceeded to throw up a 10 spot on the board, on five hits, and one error.
SMU's runs came from a Oshiro home run in the fifth and RBI single in the sixth, and RBI groundouts by
Elijiah Santiago and
Chayson Dulatre.
Aaron Shoup got the start on the mound, going four innings before
Garrison Ritter pitched 2.2 and
Zach Alcos threw the final 1.1 innings.
MSUB took the first lead in the second game as well, scoring two in the fourth inning on a single through the left side. Saint Martin's answered right back in the sixth with a
Colton Peha RBI double and RBI single from
Ryan Colvin to tie the game.
The Yellowjackets regain the lead in the bottom half of the sixth on a solo shot to right field and sent the Saints to the seventh needed one run to tie the game.
After a lead-off strikeout,
Micah McNicoll singled up the middle to put the tying run aboard. Following another strike out and SMU down to their final out, McNicoll stole second to set up Oshiro. The sophomore singled up the middle, driving home McNicoll and sent the game into extras.
However, in the bottom of the eighth, after the Saints left the bases loaded, Montana State Billings made the most of a dropped third strike. What should have been the final out of the inning, resulted in an error and another life for the Yellowjackets. Montana State Billings proceeded to walk-off the game with a two-run home run to center field to seal the 5-3 victory.
The Saints and the Yellowjackets will meet for the final time this season tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Live stats and video of the games will be available on smusaints.com.
