LACEY, Wash. – After waiting over two months to play a home game on the campus of Saint Martin's, the Saints ended the day with fireworks. Down to their final out in the seventh inning,
Alyssa French delivered the walk-off two run home run as the Saints split the doubleheader 11-3, and 6-4 against Western Washington.
Sabrina Hicks supplied the only run support in the first game, clubbing her team-leading seventh home run of the season. Her three run shot gave her 33 RBIs on the day.
Lauren Diuco made history in the second game, becoming only the eighth Saint in program history to reach the 200 career hit milestone. Western Washington trailed all second game until their final strike, when they tied the game on a RBI single. The Saints managed to get a runner on to draw up French to plate, and the senior capitalized on the opportunity. French connected on her fourth home run of the season to send the game into the night with a 6-4 victory.
In the opening game, outside of Hick's home run in the third inning, it was all Western Washingotn. The Vikings managed to score three runs in the top of the third, but the Saints' tied the game until the sixth inning. WWU scored six runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to run away with it 11-3.
However, the Saints did not wait long to extract their revenge, as
Regan Byrd opened the first inning of the second game with a two RBI double to left center. Western Washington managed to the tie the game at 2-2 in the second on a home run and later a wild pitch.
Byrd struck again in the third inning, this time going for a triple to right center, and driving in Hicks. Byrd later came in to score on a sac fly by
Alyssa French to extend the Saints' lead to 4-2 after three.
The Vikings chipped away at the lead in the fifth with one run coming in a RBI double down the left field line. The score held 4-3 until the top of the seventh, when the Vikings were down to their final strike. A batted ball just out of the reach of the Saints'
Trinity Favela skirted into the outfield, drawing home the tying run from second and knotted the game at 4-4.
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Saints record two quick outs, and looked to be on their way to extra innings. Already with two hits in the game, Byrd managed to draw the seven pitch walk to bring French to the plate. French just missed on her first swings, fouling them straight back, but she connected on the third. French put the ball into deep left field and the Saints celebrated at home plate with the 6-4 victory.
Brandi Schoessler who earned the loss in the first game, picked up the win in the second. Schoessler came in to pitch the final 1.1 innings.
Jessica O'Toole got the start, going one plus innings, before
Lauren Maley threw 4.2 innings of relief, allowing only one run.
