LACEY, Wash. – Saint Martin's opened the doubleheader with an outpouring of offense, scoring 12 runs on Simon Fraser, and sealing the game in five innings. However, the Saints' fell short in the second game, leaving the tying run in scoring position in a 5-4 ballgame.
Alyssa French, coming off of hitting a walk-off home run over Western Washington on Saturday, kept the momentum going. The senior collected four hits on the day, including four RBIs, and one run scored.
Trinity Favela connected on her first collegiate career home run, driving a ball down the left field foul pole. All nine Saints' starters in game one collected at least one hit, with five having two or more.
The Saints put four runs up on the board in the first inning to kick off the doubleheader. French delivered with a bases-clearing double to right center, and later scored on a Favela single up the middle.
Simon Fraser managed to add two runs in the second to cut the lead in half. Saint Martin's proceeded to throw up six runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by three doubles that resulted in runs.
The Clan tacked on two more in the fifth but the Saints ended the game in the bottom half of the inning. French drove in another on a RBI double, and once again Favela singled up the middle to deliver the game-winning hit in the 12-4 game.
Brandi Schoessler (14-5) picked up the win in the first game, going all five innings, allowing four runs, three earned while striking out three.
Simon Fraser jumped on the Saints early, scoring two in the first; however, the Saints responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
Devyn Connolly, who ended the day with four hits, collected a RBI in the fourth on a double, scoring
Sabrina Hicks to tie the game.
Simon Fraser regained the lead in the fifth with one run and added two more critical insurance runs in the seventh to open up a 5-2 lead. Favela began the comeback attempt with a solo shot to left field. Saint Martin's proceeded to fill the bases with only one out, and
Regan Byrd drove in one with a sac fly. However, with the tying run out at second, the game came to end on a fly ball to right field.
Jessica O'Toole got the start but only was able to record one out.
Lauren Maley (1-9) came in for relief, going 4.2 innings, allowing only the one unearned run on two hits. Schoessler pitched the final two innings in relief.
The Saints hit the road, traveling to Nampa, Idaho to face Northwest Nazarene in four-game series next Friday and Saturday.
