Portland, Ore. – Heading into the final day of the GNAC Championships, Saint Martin's was in need of two wins against the one seed, Montana State Billings. Unfortunately, they fell in game one on the day. Saint Martin's capped off a season which featured the most wins since 2011, the first GNAC Tournament berth since 2014, and their first ever trip to the GNAC Championship game.
Despite three first inning runs off the bat by MSUB,
Ryan Dorney calmed down and gave the Saints a strong six full innings. Being down five in the 7
th was no big feat for the Saints who grabbed their first run of the game off a
Cody Chavis groundout that featured a Yellowjacket error. That error allowed
Colton Peha to score from second.
Montana State Billings struck for two more in the eighth making it a 7-1 game.
Again, the Saints found themselves stringing together a strong inning. A pinch hit single by
Kahi Hirano brought home
Ryne Oshiro making it a five run game, and then senior
Austin Feist connected one last time in his Saints career. A three-run home run way out to left field made it a 7-5 ballgame.
Unfortunately, a follow-up single was wiped out by a crucial double play. That would all but end it for the Saints. A double in the ninth added one more to the board for MSUB and make it an 8-5 final.
Luke Hare,
Garrison Ritter, and
Robbie Shineman were all called in to help close out the game for the Saints.
This marks the end of the road for ten senior Saints but it is just the beginning for a great group of young Saints who will look back and build off of a remarkable 2019 season.
