LACEY, Wash. – The Saints and Wolves met one final time on Saturday, May 4. Saint Martin's celebrated their ten seniors in the program, the Wolves celebrated two more wins and a weekend sweep.
After a Friday featuring no runs scored, the Saints finally broke through on the offensive column. Unfortunately, runs did not equate to wins. Four late inning runs crushed the Saints game one hopes as they fell 7-3. Two errors and early pitching woes plagued Saint Martin's in game two as the Wolves finished the Saints off 9-4, handing them their final loss of the regular season.
Western Oregon struck first in game one with two early runs in the second and added another in the fifth.
SMU made it a ballgame in the fifth; however, breaking their 21 inning scoreless streak when
Kahi Hirano scored from third on a wild pitch.
Micah McNicoll followed up with a base hit to bring home
Bryant Nakagawa, making it a 3-2 game.
WOU extended their lead to 7-2 before the Saints grabbed one final run in the ninth ending the game by a score of 7-3 Western Oregon.
Game two held the same fate for the Saints, seeing the Wolves grab four in the second inning.
Dakota Hill cut into that lead with an RBI single that brought in
Ryan Colvin to make it a 4-1 lead. The Wolves responded for another two runs of their own in the third.
After back-to-back wild pitches,
Isaac Hegamin and
Micah McNicoll both scored from third closing the gap to 6-3 heading to the fourth. Unfortunately, the Saints were unable to match the Wolves final innings, grabbing only one more run in the fifth while the Wolves grabbed three runs in the final four innings for a final score of 9-4.
While a tough weekend for Saint Martin's baseball, there is still baseball to be played. SMU will play for the GNAC Championship beginning, Wednesday, May 8 at 6:00 p.m. They will play the number one seeded Montana State Billings in Portland, Oregon, on the campus of Concordia.
