LACEY, Wash. – Entering 2019,
Brandon Madsen was only two goals away from etching his name at the top of the Saints' all-time goals scored record. It wasn't a matter of if but when Madsen would notch that record setting goal. It didn't take along as it came in the 14th minute of the Saints' 4-0 win over Pacific on Thursday.
The historic goal came when Madsen was feed the ball at the top of the box, and he weaved his way through defenders and fired his shot past the diving hands of the Boxers' keeper. The goal marked his 31st in his career, surpassing Xan Nixon's 30 which had stood since 2011.
However, Madsen was not satisfied with just one goal, scoring his second on a free kick roughly seven yards outside of the box. Raising his season total to three, Madsen now currently sits at 32 career goals.
Saint Martin's offense continued to torch Pacific's defense in the first half, with the second goal of the match coming in the 17th minute off the foot of
Cayman John. John bent a corner kick around the lower near post.
Madsen's second goal of the match came in the 23rd minute to push the lead to 3-0. The final blow came from
Amri Mwenyeheri, who scored his first career goal to cap off the four goal effort for Saint Martin's.
"Today's game will stand out in our memory as
Brandon Madsen broke the all-time goal scoring record," said head coach
Rob Walker. "To own the all-time goals mark is unique for Brandon as he has done it in his third and final year of eligibility. We've been lucky to have some great goal scorers here at Saint Martin's since we started our program. Xan (Nixon) was unique in that his Shots-on-Goal to Goal Scoring ratio was fantastic at about 6:1. Brandon has been prolific here in just about two plus years and has amassed some great goals."
For the match, Saint Martin's outshot Pacific 23 to 3, while also recording 13 shots on target to Pacific's one. Combining for the second straight shutout win for Saint Martin's was
Dylan Shaw and
Hunter Askland in goal.
"With 'the record' out of the way, the team will be focused on a very tough Cal State University Dominguez Hills on Saturday," said Walker.
