PORTLAND, Ore. – Ali Campigotto and
Sophie Mendoza combined for the Saints' first shutout of the season with a scoreless draw against Humboldt State on Thursday, played on the campus of Concordia.
In the opening half, the Saints controlled the ball for a majority of the half, but trailed in shots category. Humboldt State recorded six shots to the Saints' two.
Shea McKnight and
Kiersten Madsen each took one shot for the Saints.
The Saints defense continued to be headline of the match, holding off another nine shots in the second half to preserve the shutout. SMU managed three more second half shots, including one on target off the foot of
Kendall Kemp.
In overtime,
Jessica Moskowitz and McKnight each had a shot but were unable to find the golden goal to end the match. Mendoza and her defense held strong for another 20 minutes in overtime and forced out the draw.
"it took us a bit to get into a rhythm, but once we did, we were creating opportunities," said head coach
Heather Cato. "We are just missing that final ball into the attacking third. Things are coming together, and players are beginning to get as a unit. We playing better soccer every game!"
Campigotto faced 7 shots in the first halfa, and was able to stop all three on target. Mendoza took over at halftime and played out the final 65 minutes, making four saves, including a 1 on 1 to help force overtime.
