LACEY, Wash. – Trailing by as many as 12 in the second half, Saint Martin's cut the score to make it a four-point game with minutes left to play. The comeback attempt was spoiled by sharp-shooting from Simon Fraser to end the game 80-69 on Thursday night.
Demonte Malloy led the Saints with 19 points, including nine rebounds. In just 18 minutes of action for
Alex Schumacher, the guard scored 16 points, while
CJ Jennings followed with 14 points while adding four rebounds and two steals. In the final minutes of the second half, the Saints used an 11-2 run to pull within four. However, Simon Fraser connected on a couple clutch baskets, and iced the game at the free throw line to secure the road victory.
The Saints opened up the game with the first five points, and looked promising from the floor. However, two turnovers gave SFU two opportunities to score, which they executed to tie the game. After baskets from both teams, SFU rattled off six straight of their own to gain the lead. The Saints cut the score within four from baskets from Malloy and
John Moore; however, Simon Fraser responded with a run of their own to extend the lead back to 12 by the seven-minute mark.
SMU managed to put a dent in SFU's lead, and regained the momentum entering the final minutes of the half. Simon Fraser quieted the crowd with two closing baskets and opened up a 38-27 lead at the break. Turnovers plagued the Saints' offensive rhythm in the first half, committing 14 turnovers, which led to 17 SFU points. Malloy led the Saints with 12 points, while
Marky Adams dominated the boards with eight rebounds.
Out of the break, both teams went basket-for-basket with SFU holding a comfortable lead. An 8-2 run from the Saints put them within seven, with 13 minutes left on the clock. This did not hold long as just minutes later, Simon Fraser cushioned another double-digit lead.
With just nine minutes to play, the Saints rattled off an 11-2 run, with baskets scored by four different Saints. This quickly switched the momentum to make it a four-point game at the 4:48 minute mark.
The momentum once again swung, and SFU found themselves up again by 10 with under two minutes left to play. Despite Saint Martin's best efforts, the comeback attempt was not enough, as the Clan secured the victory 80-69.
Adams led all players with 14 rebounds, which ties for his career-high, while adding eight points. Moore ended the game with six points and five rebounds, while
Alex Clinton recorded his first two collegiate points and grabbed two rebounds.
Saint Martin's as a team shot 23-for-60 (38.3 percent) from the floor, 6-for-34 (17.6 percent) beyond the arc, and 17-for-25 (68 percent) at the line. SMU grabbed 43 rebounds, four assists on 18 turnovers, along with four blocks and seven steals.
