BURNABY, B.C. – Saint Martin's fell to Simon Fraser 82-74 on Saturday night on the road despite a late rally for a comeback attempt. Two Saints combined for 41 points; however, the Saints still struggled to find an offensive rhythm until it was too late.
Saint Martin's (5-22, 3-15 GNAC) never led in the game, but a furious late rally cut the deficit to as few as six points with one minute of action left to play. Simon Fraser (15-12, 8-10 GNAC) regained the momentum and held the Saints to take the victory for their senior night on their home court.
CJ Jennings led all Saints in points with 24, while
Marky Adams followed with 17 to combine for half of the Saints' points. Saint Martin's shot a solid 54 percent from the floor while holding SFU to 46 percent. However, Simon Fraser had a 44 shooting percentage beyond the arc, where they scored the majority of their first half points, while limiting the Saints to just 33 percent.
After Adams scored the first three points in the game, SFU responded with 10 consecutive points to take an early lead. After going basket for basket, Simon Fraser went 4-for-4 on 3-pointers to extend their lead to 13 and push the score to 30-17.
With two minutes left in the first half, the Saints put together a 12-2 run to cut the deficit down to five. SMU held Simon Fraser's lead at seven by the break to make the score 41-34.
Saint Martin's came out of the second half looking to chip away at the lead with early baskets. However, SFU slowly pushed their lead back to double-digits in the opening eight minutes of the second half. The lead held around 10 for the next five minutes, until the Clan pushed the Saints' deficit to as many as 15, which would be the highest lead of the game.
With 1:08 on the clock, Saint Martin's scored eight straight points, six of which came from the Saints' lead scorer Jennings. With the deficit cut down to six, SMU had multiple opportunities to tie up the game; however, could not execute and fell on the road 74-82 to extend their losing streak.
Adams went 7-for-7 from the floor in addition to six rebounds, four blocks, and one steal.
John Moore finished with 11 points and four rebounds while
