Saints' Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Academy of Art

OAKLAND, Calif. – Saint Martin's offense continued to provide solid run support in both ends of the doubleheader against Academy of Art. After falling 8-5 in the opener, Harrison Goebel shut down the Urban Knights, and led the Saints to a 7-3 victory for the split.

In the opener, the Saints (4-3) got off to a great start, scoring a run in each of the first three innings. Aaron Renaud began the scoring with an RBI groundout in the opening frame. Griffin Williams connected on his first career home run in the second inning, a solo shot to left field. Then Ryne Oshiro drove in the third run with a double to left center in the top of the third.

The Urban Knights (4-7) rallied in the bottom of the fourth with a three run home run to tie the game. Then Academy of Art proceeded to take over the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs.

Elijiah Santiago drove in one run in the sixth inning with a RBI double, but Academy of Art was able to hold on to the lead. Academy of Art proceeded to add insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, and eighth to seal the 8-5 victory.

Derek Alumbaugh got the start, going four innings, with his first three being shutout. Benjamin Wadowski (0-1) picked up the loss after throwing 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. James Gunther pitched the final two outs, allowing two runs.

In the second billing, the Saints began the game with some déjà vu. Renaud connected on a ball through the left side to score McNicoll and give the Saints a 1-0 lead. However, Academy of Art came back with two runs in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead.

A sacrifice bunt by Oshiro, followed by a Williams' single plated two runs for Saint Martin's in the top of the third, and the Saints never looked back. Isaac Hegamin added a run in the sixth inning on a foul out, and Cody Chavis, and Hegamin drove in to two more insurance runs in the seventh to put SMU on top 7-3.

Goebel (2-0) got all the run support he needed, and the righty settled in after a rocky first inning. Goebel went on to toss 6.1 innings, allowing three runs, and striking out eight batters. Ryan Driscoll was called in to finish the game, and after a walk to load the bases, he forced the game-ending doubleplay to Oshiro.

The Saints and the Urban Knights close out the series tomorrow at 11 a.m. Live stats and video of the game will be available on smusaints.com.
