LACEY, Wash. – In the final game of the 2019-20 season, Saint Martin's stood to the challenge to finish on a high note and take the home court 70-66 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday night.
Saint Martin's had the game in their hands for nearly the entirety of the game, holding a lead for all but one minute. Several Saints shined in tonight's game, including the big man
Marky Adams who led the Saints, nearly marking a career-high in points with 22. He also managed to add six rebounds and four rebounds in a full 40 minutes of action.
CJ Jennings followed with 19 points, combining with Adams for over half of the Saints' points.
Saint Martin's jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, after scoring six consecutive points behind the efforts of
CJ Jennings, Adams, and
Demonte Malloy. The Nighthawks managed to come within two four different times; however, could not manage to take the lead over the Saints. The Saints shot well in their 34-30 first half lead, shooting 50 percent from the floor while limiting NNU to 36.
Both teams went basket for basket in the opening possessions of the second half with NNU edging to tie with the Saints. Saint Martin's did not allow this, and went on a 12-0 run at the 16-minute mark to push themselves past the Nighthawks and cushion a comfortable lead. SMU's lead jumped to as many as 18, with the score at 63-45 with eight minutes left on the clock.
Down the stretch, NNU's offense caught fire, and outscored SMU 21-3 over the next seven minutes. With 38 seconds left on the clock, Saint Martin's led by just two. NNU forced a turnover and had possession of the ball, but Jennings stole the ball and brought in a foul. Jennings made two free throw shots to push the lead to four, and NNU had one possession to try and tie the game but could not execute. Saint Martin's took the home court victory 70-66 to end their 2019-20 season and take the momentum into next season with all players returning.
On top of Jennings' 19 points, he recorded two rebounds and one steal.
Alex Schumacher ended the night with 13 points six rebounds, and seven assists, while
Demonte Malloy came off the bench for nine points and six rebounds.
Saint Martin's as a team shot 27-for-52 (51.9 percent) from the floor, 7-for-21 (33.3 percent) beyond the arc, and 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) at the free throw line. SMU collected 32 rebounds, and collected 14 assists on 13 turnovers, with three steals, and six blocks.
