OAKLAND, Calif. – Opening day for the Saints did not go as planned, falling to Holy Names 9-1 on Friday night.
Tanner Inouye (0-1) got the start for Saint Martin's (0-1) and went only three plus innings, while allowing seven runs on seven hits, and three punch outs. The Saints fell behind in the third inning to Holy Names (4-1), giving up four runs. The Hawks kept the pressure on, scoring three in the fourth, and lastly two in the fifth.
Saint Martin's had an opportunity to go-ahead early in the ball game, loading the bases in the second frame.
Cody Chavis, and
Jake Leonard each singled in the inning, and a walk to
Bryant Nakagawa put runners on at each stop. However, the Hawks escaped the inning with fly out to left.
The Saints' lone run of the game came in the sixth inning, starting with an error on a ball from
Micah McNicoll. After a strike out,
Aaron Renaud doubled to right field, and a sac fly from
Scott Gunther drove in the first RBI of 2020.
James Gunther came in for relief in the fourth, going two innings, allowing two runs, one earned on three hits.
Finnley Butler pitched the final three innings, giving up only three hits, and zero runs while striking out one batter.
