LACEY, Wash. – Much like the first matchup between Central Washington and Saint Martin's, the offense came in the second half. Two second half goals from
Taylor Goodpaster and
Payton Aselton led the Saints in a 3-2 loss to Central Washington on Thursday.
Saint Martin's (3-10-0, 2-7-0) recorded 10 shots in the opening half, but were unable to capitalize and put themselves up early. Central Washington (3-10-0, 2-7-0) found their tempo in second half, starting the action with a goal in the 52nd minute.
Goodpaster tied up the match just five minutes later, connecting on her first goal of the season, on an assist from
Rachel Kimura. However, the stalemate did not last long. The Wildcats took the lead back just two minutes later in the 59th minute.
Central Washington then knocked home a key insurance goal in the 76th minute to open a 3-1 lead. The goal proved vital in the 85th minute when Aselton connected on a ball 40-yards out, landing upper right to cut the lead down to one.
Saint Martin's comeback attempt was stalled out by the Wildcats' defense, who managed to control the ball for most of the final five minutes to secure the 3-2 victory.
The Saints' 20 shots were tied for the most by SMU in a GNAC match this season. Five Saints finished with three shots including
Rebecca Garrison,
Maddie Wolff,
Elisabeth Cole, Kimura, and
Justine Pauly.
Ali Campigotto got the start in goal, going for the full 90, and recording seven saves on 16 shots faced.
The Saints are back in action this Saturday, October 23 at 2:00 PM against Western Oregon. Live stats and video will be available on smusaints.com.
