LACEY, Wash. – In a historic day for Saint Martin's baseball,
Tanner Inouye became the all-time strikeout king in program history, surpassing 170 total, as Saint Martin's split with Central Washington to open the year.
With strong winds to straight away center, Central Washington (1-1) poked a 3-run home run down the right field line to comeback and defeat the Saints (1-1) 10-to-8 in the opener. In the second game,
Tanner Inouye claimed history with his fourth of eight strikeouts on the day, becoming the Saints' all-time leader in strikeouts. A
Reid Little double in the sixth to left center plated the go-ahead and game-winning runs in the Saints 6-to-4 victory.
The opener was a back-and-forth affair, with the Saints striking first in the third inning. RBIs from
Ryne Oshiro and
Ty Matsunami put Saint Martin's up 2-0. Central Washington responded in the fourth inning with a four spot to take their first lead.
An
Aaron Renaud home run to center, and a
Chayson Dulatre two out two RBI double helped give the Saints back the lead. Saint Martin's tacked on another in the sixth to open a 6-to-4 lead. Central Washington once again found a way back, and heading into the bottom of the eighth, had regain the lead at 7-to-6.
The Saints added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to retake the lead, but Central Washington once again rallied. The Wildcats, using the wind, lanced a ball down the right field line for a 3-run home run to clinch a 10-to-8 victory.
Ryan Ancheta got the start, going six innings, striking out eight, and only walking one with four runs allowed in his first Saints' start.
Jacob Woodall and
James Gunther (0-1) combined to toss the final three innings.
Central Washington struck first in the second cap, adding one in both the first and second. Little drove in the first run for the Saints on a single down the right field line.
Braeden McNally tied the game in the second with his RBI single to right.
Cody Chavis came through in the third with a two RBI single to left to put SMU back on top. After the Wildcats tied the game in the fifth, it was Little once again delivering at the plate. His two RBI double to left center proved to the be the game-winning hit for the Saints.
Inouye gave the Saints five innings in the second game, allowing four runs, while punching out eight.
Ryan Driscoll (1-0) closed out the final two scoreless innings to help the Saints to the doubleheader split.
Saint Martin's travels to Central Washington for the series finale tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
