LACEY, Wash. – After Whitworth rattled off five seventh inning runs to complete the comeback in game one, the Saints routed the Pirates 11-to-3 in six innings to salvage a split on the day.
Saint Martin's (3-1) was in full control of the first game until the final frame when Whitworth (1-1) managed to string together a couple extra base hits to storm back for the win. However, the Saints answered right back, scoring three in the second, and another five in the sixth to earn the victory.
It took the Saints five innings to get on the board, but broke it open in the fifth, scoring four runs. RBI hits from
Karley Yoshioka and
Julia Lucas fueled the inning. After Whitworth scored two in the top of the sixth,
Devyn Connolly drove in a run with a pinch-hit single down the left field line.
Abby Runyon (1-1), who had thrown a solid game, six innings, three runs, heading into the final frame, was unable to close the door. The Pirates went for five runs on five hits and one SMU error.
In the second game,
Kylee Vanderbout provided the offense for the Saints, first with a double in the left center gap, scoring two. The outfielder then connected on her second home run of the season in the fifth to help the Saints break open the game. Saint Martin's returned the favor in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on five hits to seal the six inning victory.
Tia Ridings (1-1) got the start in the second game, and after tossing seven shutout innings last weekend, went another 3.2 before giving up her first run of her collegiate career. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that Ridings allowed her first earned run of the year.
Saint Martin's and Whitworth square off again tomorrow in the series finale doubleheader at noon.
