BILLINGS, Mont. – Despite a late home run surge by the Saints, Montana State Billings came away with two victories, and the series win on Sunday.
The Saints (4-6, 1-3 GNAC) belted four home runs in the second game, including three in the final two innings of the second game. However, the Yellowjackets' (3-13, 3-5 GNAC) offense had built up enough of a padding to survive, 9-to-6, the comeback attempt. MSU Billings used a seven run sixth inning to take the front end of the doubleheader 11-to-4.
Saint Martin's fell behind early, 4-0, in the first inning of the first game, before
Reid Little connected on his first of two home runs on the day in the second. His solo blast was the lone run for the Saints until the fifth when
Ty Matsunami drove in one, along with a balk cut the score to one.
Aaron Renaud tied the game later in the inning on a double to center field.
But the Yellowjackets stormed back with their seven running sixth inning to overcome the Saints 11-to-4.
Renaud led off the second game with a solo shot to left, his fourth of the season. The Yellowjackets scored seven straight runs to take a lead into the final frames of the day. Little once again went yard in the sixth, followed by home runs from
Ryne Oshiro, and
Cody Chavis in the seventh. Despite the power, the Saints fell 9-to-6 in the closer.
The Saints return home next weekend to face nationally-ranked Northwest Nazarene starting at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 26. Live stats and video of the games will be available on smusaints.com.
