MONMOUTH, Ore. – Trailing by three in the ninth, the Saints scored four runs on clutch at-bats from the middle of the order to steal a 7-to-6 victory in the opener of a doubleheader against Western Oregon on the road.
An opening walk, followed by three straight hit-batters, the Saints (3-3) managed to get a run in the ninth.
Ryne Oshiro, and
Ty Matsunami drove in the next two runs to tie the game. After an intentional walk to
Aaron Renaud,
Cody Chavis drove in the eventual game-winning run,
James Gunther sealed the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with two strikeouts. In the second game, Western Oregon (1-1) defeated the Saints in seven innings 18 to 2.
Saint Martin's took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on a Western Oregon error, and an RBI for Brian Nakagawa. Western Oregon immediately tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Renaud put SMU back on top with his RBI single through the left side in the third inning. Western Oregon added one in the fourth and broke open a 6-3 lead in the seventh inning before the Saints rallied in the ninth to win.
Tanner Inouye started the game, going three innings before
Jacob Woodall pitched three in relief on one run ball.
Ryan Driscoll pitched the seventh, followed by
Finnley Butler (1-0) pitched the eighth, and
James Gunther earned his first save.
In the second billing of the doubleheader, Western Oregon got their revenge, scoring 18 runs, including nine in the fourth. The game was ultimately called due to darkness in the seventh inning.
Saint Martin's returns to play on Friday, March 19 on the road at Montana State Billings.
