Saints Struggle After Slow Start

LACEY, Wash.Jose Marquez notched a goal assisted by Brian Licona in the final 15 minutes, but it was not enough as the Saints dropped a 4-1 decision on Friday night against Pacific Lutheran.

It was the case again against Pacific Lutheran (10-3), with Saint Martin's (1-3-1) jumping out to a slow start on Friday night. Pacific Lutheran took the lead early in the 1st minute of the game, then extended their lead to 2-0 with another goal in the 16th minute. The Saints' offense struggled to find their footing in the first half, with PLU holding the Saints to zero shot attempts.

Saint Martin's got their first shot attempt at the 51-minute mark, but PLU continued to pounce with two more goals in a span of five minutes.

Senior defender Jose Marquez made it a 4-1 game when he headed a ball off a corner kick from Licona into the corner of the net. This marked his fifth career goal and first of the season. The Lutes peppered two more shot attempts at Hunter Askland in goal, but were unable to find the back of the net once again.

Saint Martin's managed one more shot attempt in the 88th minute, but Pacific Lutheran's goalie recorded the save from the bottom right corner of the goal.

Bryce Porter played in goal for the Saints for the first 45 minutes, recording one save while Askland came in for the remaining 45 and put up three saves.

The Saints will hit the road next week to Nampa, Idaho to face Northwest Nazarene for two matches. The first game will be Thursday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. with live stats and video available at smusaints.com.
