BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Against historically the best team in the GNAC in Western Washington, the Saints went wire-to-wire against the Vikings at Bellingham, ultimately falling in a 1-0 performance.
Ali Campigotto anchored the Saints' defense throughout the match that recorded nine saves on 19 shots. Western's lone goal came in the 29th minute on a breakaway that led to an open shot.
Saint Martin's was focused on their offensive approach, with four of their seven shots coming on target in the match.
Kiersten Madsen add three of those attempts, and had two land on goal. Taylor Goodpastor, and
Lexi Caceres also had one shot on goal.
The Saints created opportunities throughout the match for an equalizing goal, and put pressure on the Vikings backline to make stops. Meanwhile, the backline of Saint Martin's held strong for a majority of the match, stopping almost all of the Vikings' attacks.
The one goal margin of loss was the closest match between these two squads since 2015, and the first time SMU has held Western Washington to only one goal in nine years.
Saint Martin's returns home this Saturday against Central Washington at 1:00 PM. Live stats and streaming will be available on smusaints.com.
