BILLINGS, Mont. – After a week off, the Saints' offense looked rested and like well-oiled machine, knocking six home runs, including a school record five in the first game as SMU took both ends of the doubleheader 7-5 and 9-2 on Saturday.
All six of the Saints homeruns came from either pull side or to center field, as Saint Martin's clinched two huge victories to move up in the GNAC standings.
Britney Patrick delivered with two home runs in the opener, and
Julia Lucas added another two of her own including going back-to-back with
Kylie Lopez.
Destiny Conerly added to the count with her two run home run in the fourth inning of the first game.
Saint Martin's scored their first six runs of the first game on home runs until Lopez drove in their seventh and final run in the sixth on a single up the middle. The game looked to be all but over entering the final innings with the Saints leading 7-0.
Montana State Billings managed to put a dent into the lead, scoring five runs in the sixth. But Saint Martin's was able to settle back down, and seal the victory behind the complete game performance from
Abby Runyon.
In the second game, both sides went back and forth in the early goings with the Saints scoring two runs on hits from
Olivia Schmidt and Patrick. Saint Martin's added another two runs in the 3rd inning but broke open the game in the 4th on Lucas' two run blast.
The Saints continued to add to the lead in the 7th, scoring three runs on two RBI doubles and a wild pitch to cruise to a 9-2 victory.
Savannah Owen pitched another complete game performance, keeping the Jackets' bats in check with only two runs, and punching out six batters.
Saint Martin's and Montana state buildings will wrap up the series with a doubleheader, starting tomorrow Sunday at 10:00 AM PST. Live stats and streaming will be available on smusaints.com.
