MONMOUTH, Ore. – Despite a late go-ahead three-run home run from
Griffin Williams in the opener, the Saints dropped both ends of the doubleheader against Western Oregon on Saturday.
Western Oregon jumped out to early 4-0 lead after three innings before the Saints responded with six straight runs.
Drew Forgione jumpstarted the offense in the fifth inning with an RBI triple to right field.
Then in the seventh, the Saints did a majority of their damage.
Braeden McNally drove in two runs in the seventh-inning with a single up the middle.
Griffin Williams added on to the Saints score with a three run blast the left field to put SMU up 6 to 4 after seven.
However, Western Oregon managed to respond in the seventh, adding a run, before a three-run home run in the eighth sealed the win for the Wolves.
In the second game,
Mark Steward's first career home run proved to be the lone offensive run support the Saints manufactured all game. The freshman's blast came in the second inning to cut the lead down to just one. But runs in the third and sixth wrapped up the 4 to 1 victory for WOU.
The Saints return to action next weekend against Central Washington at home on Saturday.
