Saints Recognize Three Seniors On Senior Day

Courtney Misner

LACEY, Wash. – The Saints left it all out of the field Saturday on the day that they honored three seniors for their last career home game.

Western Washington managed to pull away with the victory after securing two goals, one in each half. SMU scored one lone goal, but were not able to connect on the other scoring opportunities to force an overtime match.

Both teams started the game off with a fight defensively, without a goal being scored until the 17th minute when Western Washington managed to get around the Saints' defense off a pass into the box. The Saints came close to equalizing before the end of the half, with a shot from Jason Fairhurst that was barely saved by the goalkeeper on the edge of the goal, then a shot from Cole Mattson who barely missed the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Saints came into the second half with even more fire, as they were fighting to come back from 1-0 to tie up the game. Jason Aragon nearly came away with the equalizer goal after being set up perfectly, but just barely missed out to the left. WWU managed to get another goal past the defense, but Saint Martin's quickly responded in the 83rd minute with a goal from Mattson off a deflected blocked shot by Jason Fairhurst.

Down one goal, the Saints struggled to control the ball in the final minutes to come up with a comeback to force the game into overtime.

Mattson finished the game with five shots for the Saints, one of which was the lone goal in the second half. Fairhurst recorded two shots, both on goal. Hunter Askland played in goal for the first 45 minutes, facing seven shots with one save. Bryce Porter played the final 45, coming up against eight shots while making two saves.

Saint Martin's three seniors were honored in pregame ceremonies: Nick Philips, Stephen Murray, and Brandon Kam. All three seniors have played all four years for SMU and have made a big impact on the program's success over those four years.

The Saints ended their season 2-7-1 overall record.
