HONOLULU, Hawaii – Taking on red hot Chaminade to close out the Hawai'i Challenge, Saint Martin's fell in straight sets, 25-16, 27-25, 25-14.
Ilana Sagapolutele and
Tia Allen led the offense with nine kills and accounted for 18 of the Saints' (5-3) 31 kills on the afternoon.
Giselle Benetti came in for 19 digs in just three sets for a 6.33 digs per set average.
The first set was close to begin, with Chaminade (9-2) barely holding on to a 10-to-9. The Silverswords began to pull away midway through, and a 7-to-1 run at the end of the set closed out the Saints
Saint Martin's trailed late in the second set, 22-18, before rattling off five straight side outs to regain a lead. Chaminade, one kill away from dropping the set, managed to come back, taking four of the final five points to steal away a 27-25 second set.
A 10-to-1 run by the Silverswords in the middle of the third set proved to be too much for the Saints to handle, and eventually fell 25-14 to conclude their tournament action.
Saint Martin's returns to Lacey and Marcus Pavilion for their 2021 home opener next week to begin GNAC action. The Saints host Alaska Anchorage on Thursday at 7:00 PM with live stats and video available on smusaints.com.
