Saints' Comeback Attempt Runs Out Of Time In Loss

GOLDEN, Colo. – Saint Martin's went on the road and faced a top-10 team in Colorado School of Mines in their season opener. The Saints trailing by two, scored a goal from Jason Fairhurst in the 74th minute to cut into the lead and pressure the Orediggers. However, the upset bid came up short as Mines held on a 2-1 victory.

The first half looked to be heading towards a shut out, but Mines (1-0) managed to alter the score with just eight seconds left. Mines and Saint Martin's (0-1) were nearly equal in almost every stat category including shots (5-to-4 Mines), and corners (3-to-2 Mines), and shots on goals (1-to-0 Mines).

However, the second half favored Mines in the stats, including a goal in the 57th minute to extend their lead to 2-to-0. But the Saints were not done.

Despite only taking two shots, and just one on goal in the second half, SMU made the most of the one. Fairhurst drilled home his first goal of the season, and the 11th of his career in the 74th minute. Saint Martin's put the pressure back on Mines in the final 15 minutes of the match but were unable to add another and complete the comeback attempt.

Fairhurst recorded four of the Saints' six shots, with Seth Kobata, and Caden Martin adding one each. Jose Marquez assisted on the goal scored by Fairhurst. Hunter Askland played a full 90 in goal, seeing 15 shots, and allowed the two goals.

Saint Martin's continues their road trip in Colorado, traveling to Regis for a noon start time on Sunday. Live stats and video of the match will be available on smusaints.com.
