MONMOUTH, Ore. – Trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, the Saints refused to quit, nearly pulling off the comeback over Western Oregon, ultimately falling 68-64 on Saturday.
Saint Martin's (9-3, 1-2) four game win streak came to close as the hands of Western Oregon (5-5, 1-2). The Saints' offense struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, scoring just 13 points on 4-for-23 shooting.
Tierney DeDonatis and
Rian Clear helped spark the offense in the second half, scoring 39 combined points, and hitting six of the Saints' seven 3-pointers.
Western Oregon's offense jumped out to an 11-point lead after the first quarter. The Saints' first basket was a 3-pointer from Clear nearly nine minutes into the game.
The Wolves' lead extended to 16 by the break, but the Saints' offense started to come alive in the second half. In the second half, Saint Martin's shot 17-for-30 from the field, including 6-for-11 beyond the arc.
With the offensive resurgence, the Saints managed to trim the lead down to just one point on two different occasions. However, timely baskets down the stretch from the Wolves sealed the 68-64 final score.
