LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's men's soccer team (2-12-2, 2-7-1 GNAC) had second half lead on a regionally ranked team for the second time in as many games, but in the end, it wasn't enough, as Simon Fraser (10-5, 7-3 GNAC) mustered some magic to comeback and defeat SMU by a score of 3-2. This was a sour end to a day that started with the Senior Day celebrations of
Bryce Porter,
Hunter Askland,
Christian Gordon, and
Jay Mendoza.
It was an absolute storybook start for the Saints as Mendoza lofted a perfect free kick to the far post which Gordon looped up and over the SFU goalie and into the back of the net. Gordon has been a frequent participant in most games he's been on the soccer team, but this was his first ever goal in the red and black. Seconds after the goal,
Nick Mueller kept the zero on the board for the Red Leafs as a chip shot nearly got over him and across the goal line, but he was able to chase it down a swat it before it crossed. Thanks to that, SMU carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Again, magic struck for the Saints in the second half. This time it was
Diego Andrade who created space for himself by dribbling through and around defenders down the right side of the box. Before the ball leaked over the end line, Andrade fired a hard ground cross that found the foot of
Daniel Shooshan who promptly struck the ball first time through the posts for a 2-0 lead. It was first career goal for the freshman, coincidentally enough coming in his first ever game against a school from his home country of Canada.
The Red Leafs were far from out, scoring off a corner less than a minute later. SFU then struck again in the 76
th to tie the game, and in the 82
nd to take the lead and break Saint Martin's heart. Despite multiple good looks in the final minutes, SMU couldn't find an equalizer, and they fell by a final of 3-2.
The Saints will be on the road of Monday, October 31
st with a makeup game against Seattle Pacific (5-5-6, 4-2-3 GNAC). Kickoff is set for 1 PM at Interbay Stadium.
