LACEY, WA. – The Saint Martin's volleyball team (12-6, 2-6 GNAC) had a dominating third set against Western Washington (12-4, 7-1 GNAC), but the Vikings were just too much, as they overpowered the Saints and won 3-1 (25-17, 25-12, 16-25, 25-19).
After losing the first two sets, and losing the first point of the third, SMU went on a powerful six-point run, including two kills from
Zoey Crimin, two kills from
Loredana Fouonji, and a block from Fouonji and
Tia Allen. The Saints continued to roll in the third, holding a comfortable lead against the Vikings the entire set.
Jennifer Soha had a big kill to make it 20-14, before two straight aces from
Karla Soto put SMU a sniff away from grabbing the set. Crimin got another kill, Crimin and Allen combined for a block, and eventually a bad serve by WWU gave the set victory to Saint Martin's by a score of 25-16.
The visitors squeeked out a win in the fourth and final set, but not before a good battle was put up by SMU. The Saints distributed the ball well all night, led by Soto who had 36 assists. Allen and Fouonji were stellar with nine kills and four blocks each, while
Emmy Hansen led SMU with 12 kills.
The Saints will now play host to the Red Leafs of Simon Fraser (6-11, 3-5 GNAC) on Saturday, October 8
th.
