Women’s Basketball Trick or Treats for Canned Goods

LACEY, Wash. – All Hallow's Eve, a night where kids dress up in costume, grab a nice big bag, and go around the neighborhood asking for candy. Well, it's not just for kids. The Saint Martin's women's basketball team participated in their own trick or treating on Halloween night…with a twist. Instead of asking for candy, they asked for canned goods for a local shelter. Now, despite no official games played yet, the women's basketball team has already picked up a big win, collecting over 600 food items to donate.

"We haven't been able to do it in a few years [because of COVID], but it's a great team bonding activity and the community seems to like it, so we love it," said senior guard Lauryn Morris, "People think it's hysterical, seeing a bunch of 18–23-year-olds running around dressed in full costume going from house to house, it's pretty funny."

This is one of numerous times throughout the year that the women's basketball has taken time to volunteer for the betterment of the greater community.

"[Volunteering] is definitely part of our Saints' Way," remarked senior center Emily Nelson, "Coach brings in people who are all about volunteer work and giving to others, that's a big pillar in our program. Getting in time to give to the community when we can is really important."

"It's nice for the community to know that we're here and we're more than happy to do things for them," added Morris, "If that attracts people to want to come and support us, then we're more than happy with that."

Nelson, Morris, and the rest of the Saints basketball team will be collecting a lot more basketball buckets than canned goods once the season officially gets underway in just over a week. In their first official game, the Saints will host Capilano University on Saturday November 12th, at 2 PM.
